Pre Trip Assignment

Dr. Londino

On March 12th 2009, I leave the country for the first time! I am going to China with Kean University and I can hardly wait! We will be visiting Beijing, Xi’an, HangZhou, and Shang Hai.

I am mostly excited to visit Beijing. After being an avid watcher of the Olympicgames, and seeing the images of the Great Wall ,I have grown a need to see them in person.  The great wall was built over 2000 years ago during the Qin Dynasty. The wall was used during the wars and had the first line of defense stationed there to protect against the nomadic Hsiung Nu tribes or also known as the Huns.It goes across the mountains of northern china, going north and norwest. This wall is amazingly 4000 miles long and is made up of rock, masonry and packed earth. I am also very excited to see the Olympic Stadium I saw so much on tv last year.

Xi’an the home of the Terracotta Warriors is also a place that I am very thrilledabout visiting. I have learned about the warriors prior to this trip in two classes of mine,three-dimension sculpture and also in my sculpture fabrication class. I have learned how much work it takes to put into making a sculpture and can truly appreciate the 40 years it took to create a life size army.

Hang Zhou is probably the one city that I have never heard about before booking this trip. However in my research I have found that Hang Zhou is the capital of the Zheijing Province and is one of China’s great tourist attractions. The West Lake is the most known highlight in Hang Zhou, it is known for it’s natural beauty, a place where even Marco Polo visited in his explorations in the 13th century. Hang Zhou is also known for the tea house museum, silk museums and great shopping.

Shang Hai  is also known as the “Oriental Pearl City.”  Shang Hai is known for it’s fast development and it’s progress is just continues on the rise. It’s economical success is because of the growth in politics, finance, trade, technology and science It is compared to cities like New York and Paris. The city of Shang Hai will be hosting the World Expo in 2010 .I can’t wait to see the Oriental Pearl TV tower because in pictures it looks like one of the most futuristic buildings I have ever seen!I can’t wait to experience the culture of China. Everything I have read about is so exciting! I will be bringing my camera in hopes to capture all of Ancient China that I can. I have seen films that were set in China and I feel that I have so much to learn about their culture.
